Happy Birth Day...

October 17, 2012  •  3 Comments

Yesterday I had the privilege of being present as Kim and Kevin welcomed their beautiful baby boy, Reid Phoenix into the world. It was a very intense and quick home water birth delivery right into Daddy's loving arms. Kim being a midwife coached, him through each phase of her labor and delivery. Seeing the two of them work together was quite an amazing and inspiring sight.
In fact each time I get the opportunity to put my birth photographer hat on, it's an amazing sight. Not one birth is exactly the same. I attend mostly home births, however when the hospitals let me in, you can find me there too. I feel like birth is as much of a life event as a wedding and why not photograph it? Many see it as a beautiful rite of passage and I think that's awesome! No matter how a baby gets here, the number of bonds a new baby creates in a family are numerous and deeply meaningful. My goal is to show that bond as organically as possible.

I found my niche' in birth photography at the same time that I started my business full time two years ago. I've always been intrigued by pregnancy and birth, even as a young kid, and I just somehow feel very comfortable around it. Kim has always been a huge advocate of my work and a cheerleader for KHP. Being a part of the birthing community in southern Wisconsin with Kim has been such a rewarding experience. As you can imagine I was thrilled when she asked that I document her son's arrival. Arriving with only 30 minutes to spare the light filled her bedroom with the glory of heaven and together she and her husband welcomed their baby with intensity and love.

Reid was 10lbs 2oz and absolutely perfect! Congratulations Kim and Kevin!

Congrats to Kim and her beautiful family! Wonderful photos. Kim was my midwife and I'm glad she got the kind of peaceful birth experience she helped me to have. :)

And I LOVE the shot of Reid sticking his toes in dad's face! Katie girl, you've got the touch with that camera.
