"Please someone just take her."
What they did not realize at the time is that this arduous delivery was proving what they were capable of. The following 48 hours were some of the hardest of their life together. As they bonded and got to know their new baby, Asher, they found that she was a very sleepy baby. Waking her to feed the first night made them chuckle. "She must have been tired too!" But that quickly escalated to panic when they realized she was failing to thrive while spoon feeding her breastmilk. They took her to the local ER where she was diagnosed with a bowel obstruction and taken to Milwaukee Children's Hospital for immediate surgery. They were devastated, they were exhausted, they were panicked. Not only 48 hours after a 30 hour labor, Sarah and Mark were pacing the inside of a hospital where their littlest girl was fighting for her life and their older 3 daughters were back at home.
________________________________________________________________________________________________
Through all of this they also learned that Asher had Down Syndrome.
"In the course of these 12 hours I don't think I could have cried more. [...]
I was sad, angry, exhausted, grateful, in pain."
________________________________________________________________________________
With a resilient little girl in recovery they leaned on each other and their faith in God. They found their laughter again. They found their strength. They were reminded that they had a support system to lean on. Sarah and Mark stayed at Ronald McDonald House. They found wisdom and solace and appreciation for their new daughter from Down Syndrome Association of Wisconsin and Down Syndrome Diagnosis Network.
"Even though I wasn't entirely convinced at that moment,
I knew I would be excited about it eventually. And these people were there for us."
...
Over the last year, Sarah and Mark have watched their baby girl thrive! They have learned so much about themselves throughout the process and know that they have been entrusted to raise one of the strongest and most determined people. They look forward to joining Asher in breaking down the stereotypes for people with Ds!
It was an absolute honor to work with the Kemen Family to celebrate Asher's first birthday. Asher has 3 big sisters, Miriam, Esther, and Abigail.
I hope you guys enjoy these photos for years to come are a reminder to you of how far you all have come as a family.

Forest preserves and naturescapes are lovely backgrounds for family photos, but very often you can find a less buggy and super-quaint option in your own hometown! I love shooting in and around urban areas like small downtown area, alley ways, and promenades. These spaces tend to be far less buggy and can even protect from the wind, as was the case on this particular day! 30mph winds be damned, we got this session in anyway!
If you're looking for your family photographer, I would love to chat with you!
((hugs))

Designer Mommy & Me dresses for this session are from Elestory.
This week I got to enjoy time with Henrik and Tilly for their 4 month milestone photos. These littles are growing so fast and we got to chat about all the thing; sleep deprivation, colic, giggles, teething, breastfeeding, going back to work, and of course how the heck you could possibly love someone SO much!
I give parents of twins loads of credit. Raising two babies at the same time is exhausting work!
((hugs))

This was a gorgeous in-home lifestyle session that I did to celebrate baby girl's 18mo milestone. Even I forget at times how curious and active toddler can be. Making them pose in a studio is hardly fun for them and more often than not frustrating for parents. In-home sessions give them the opportunity to show me who they are. I let them take the reigns. It's a technique I used YEARS ago as a teen babysitter. Playful curiosity is their love language.
They are unscripted. They are playful. They are full of authenticity.
I am booking all of my 2019 sessions through September 1st right now. I would love to see your family this year.

To see these little personalities grow and change over the years.
To see the kids excitement when they share their world with me.
To chat with Mom and Dad about the successes and struggles of being parents.
I am a firm believer that we have a ripple effect in everything we do and the best place to start is in our own communities. Being able to see my clients year after year and meet them where they are at (wherever that is at that moment) and allow them to celebrate all of it...is so awesome to me! I'm so thankful I get to be here to do this everyday! Thank you Jan & Miranda for sharing a small piece of your world with me. I think these memories are some of the best yet!

Let me explain...
Although we don't have the gorgeous leaves in the background of this session, it was honestly THE PERFECT night for photography. The sunset light was gorgeous, the temperature was very tolerable for everyone (including baby), AND the time of sunset which gives us this amazing light is later in the day, accommodating getting dinner in ahead of the session and far less stress on a weeknight that is inevitably after work and school. The flexibility that September affords me and my clients is immeasurable and I'm super excited to share this crazy awesome session with all of you. Little Evan is celebrating his ONE YEAR milestone and asserting his growing personality in the cutest ways! Happy Birthday, Little Man!

The parenting phrase 'it takes a village' is also applicable when raising a business. I've been told many times over the years to delegate wherever I can, to stick to what I like best about my business, and what I'm most good at. That advice could not be more accurate. I've learned that trying to do it all myself is a waste of time, energy, and more often than not never gets the job done the way I want it. Either due to lack of skill or proper production time. Giving up control is a huge part of owning a small or micro business. If this is your story right now- I encourage you to start letting go and find your village. Find the professionals that will help you thrive and make your life easier!
For me, one of those people was Axel's Mom, Emma of Epple Design.
If you haven't seen the new KHP Welcome Guide, *sigh* is beautiful! It's everything that I wanted for helping my clients decide on, plan, and invest in their photography from start to finish and Emma was the master designer behind the whole thing! I'm so glad I had her expertise throughout the process! When I first took in her inquiry and we got to know each other, I couldn't much ignore the fact that our artistic chemistry was spot on and she was a great fit for this project that I had literally been poking at for almost 2 years! YES!!! That's right, it's been 2 years!!! I know, I know...my ability to let go of control is a whole other blog post for another day...
But, here we were. I finally jumped at the chance to employ someone else's professional services to help me grow my business and take back my own time!
It worked! On top of it, I'm getting to share their family as my art. I'm so proud of this session! Working in a new studio space for the better part of a year has been wonderful, but just like anything it takes time to find the sweet spot. To know exactly how the light will look at a given time of day, how I want my props positioned and what my camera settings need to be to get the best look in post production.
*Deep Breathe*
When it all comes together like that, you know that you can move through the creative process much smoother and with less trial and error! That is a gift right there! The relief for me is priceless! I'm excited to keep exploring my creativity more productively. Thank you, Emma!
Please join me in welcoming Axel Earthside. Happy Birthday sweet guy!

This little lady has been so highly anticipated in her house. Her two big brothers have been ready to love on her for awhile!
And her parents have been more than ready to have a baby girl to dress and love to pieces. When Mom called me up to chat
about their newborn session, she wanted to know one thing- if I had purple props! And gosh, do I! I was so happy to meet
this awesome family at the studio and be entrusted with their newborn memories. Happy Birth Day, Ellorie!

I have watched this family love on each other from the day that Tony & Nicole said I do. They blended their families and then welcome their daughter Scarlett. Her newborn photos are some of my all time favorites and watching her grow and bond with her two older brothers has been an honor! At age 3 she is a little bashful and appropriately stubborn for the age. I can confidently say that we got her personality to shine in these images. Her bond with Daddy is so strong right now and it was exactly what she needed to coming out of her shell. And what kid can deny their joy for bubbles?!

To watch families grow and change is such a high for me. I'm beyond blessed to call this profession mine and that I get to hand over memories like this for families to cherish forever. Life is about the bonds we make with the people we love. The people that set our souls on fire. The people that we choose to write our stories with. When we love that fiercely it's easy to celebrate each other just as much. Congrats to Sam & Vince for getting through another first year with a brand new little person. Parenting is tough stuff, but love makes it all worth it!
Happy Birthday, Enzo! You are one awesome little guy!

This spring I've chosen a more authentic approach to my newborn sessions, whether we're in my studio or in a client's home.
These lifestyle sessions incorporate soft textures and the ability for the entire family to remain relaxed and function on their own terms.
I'm simply smitten with with the results and how real and candid they feel.

The unpredictable spring weather allows me to create my custom sessions inside the comfort of my natural light studio. I invited Krystal and Chris over for a late afternoon session when I knew the light would be a little dramatic and contrasty. I wanted to play with some window lit shadows for their maternity session. With the help of a few modifiers I was also able to throw the light around and reflect it for some more evenly lit shots, which brought their gallery together just the way I planned. I love how these images brought out their adorable relationship and excitement for their new little one.

I'm so excited that I get to love on this little lady a bit more today! She was such an awesome little baby to photograph. She was so good to me! She slept almost the entire session! We swaddled her a number of ways. Big brother even got to hold her and snuggle with her quite a bit. It made my job so easy and I got to stretch my creativity that much farther!
She's growing stronger and bigger by the day and I'm so glad that her family has these images to remind them of her first few teeny tiny days.

Babies grow and change so fast and as Moms and Dads we often feel like it goes too quick. Especially when our attention shared
with older siblings, household responsibilities, etc, etc. Newborn sessions should be cherished. Those snapshot of your
new little one when he/she was so fresh, so new will bring you endless joy when they begin crawling, walking, talking and
throwing tantrums. ;)
I love capturing the little baby details to the family as a whole. The session also creates a safe and comfortable space for you to
relax and be in the moment with your little one with no expectations or responsibilities expect to love your family.
This family was the epitome of relaxed and because of that, baby was relaxed. He was so good to me, slept almost the entire session
and even when he woke up was still adorable and content in front of the camera.

For the second time, I was invited to capture this family's baby story from maternity session through first year, including their birth story. I had the honor of doing the same for their son a few years prior and was delighted when they hired me again to document their daughter's. Being welcomed into such a transforming time in a young family's life is humbling to say the least. We met just a few weeks ago to celebrate their daughter's first birthday with a smash cake and family session.
Cue the tears!
It must come from having been through this with my own kids, but I can't fight the sense of completion and the small pang of disappointment as a series comes to an end. As they dive into their smash cake, I will catch myself thinking about how little they once were. I will find it hard to believe how expressive they have become while I bribe them for a cute smile. I even think about what will be ahead for them based on my own experiences with my kiddo's milestones. It's my dilemma as an empathic person and what I know makes me good at my job, but watching these babies and families grow is such a joy for me. I love sharing my talent and ability to freeze time in a beautiful and creative format. I hope they cherish these images and share them with each other always.
This has literally been over a year in the making, but I'm so excited to share an example of a full baby planner series. Enjoy!
Maternity Session
We couldn't have timed their maternity session more perfectly. A warm fall morning allowed them time to engage with their son while apple picking.
Birth Session
Their sweet little girl arrived midday at Lutheran General Hospital in Park Ridge, Illinois. None of us knew just how quickly she would arrive after spending some time snuggling with big brother. These last moments as a family of three just pull at my heart. Literally at the edge of change right here.
Baby girl's arrival was fast and furious! Even the hospital staff didn't have much warning. As a photographer I have to thank her, because we had such gorgeous lighting in the room. Natural light is such a treat to have a birth. Mom was simply shocked when she delivered her beautiful girl after such a short, intense labor. She and Daddy enjoyed a snuggle in the sunshine from the rocking chair before they headed to the recovery room with Mom.
Newborn Session
After everyone was home from the hospital, I joined the family at their house for a fun newborn session that paired lifestyle photography and some posed images together. Big bro was getting used to having his little sis in the house permanently and sharing his parent's attention. I think he enjoyed being in the spotlight for a portion of the session.
Milestone Session
A six/seven month session brought us back to fall. A full year since their maternity photos! The colors were gorgeous for this session and baby girl was going through some separation anxiety. She did not want to be away from mom for long and we employed the divide and conquer approach with both kiddos. The thing I love about this family is they truly allow a go with the flow attitude and in doing so enable me to get some really authentic images.
First Year Milestone Session
Rounding out the series with the biggest milestone of all- the ONE YEAR session means that we have a fully mobile baby with a fully developed opinion! This is when it's great fun to reminisce about baby's birth and how far they've come as a family unit in such a short time. Happy Birth Day!!

I adore working with clients that embrace the chaos that can comes with being a young family.
It's one of the many gifts that we learn as we grow into Moms and Dads. Going with the ever changing flow is par for the course
and days are never the perfect picture that we envision in our mind.
This was just some of the beautiful conversation that this couple and myself exchanged at their session. A candid, lifestyle studio session
was just what they were looking for so their babies could be uniquely themselves and their joyful love could be captured so authentically.
I loved getting to know them and I look forward to watching their babies grow and change. They were too fun!

I'm completely smitten with this little one and so is the rest of his family!
His grandma is a friend of my family's who couldn't contain her excitement when she told me he had arrived.
I was deeply touched that they hired me for their first family portraits. I couldn't be happier for them and I can't wait to watch this little guy grow.

Today I get to gush over Michelle and Adam. I can not tell you how over the moon I am for these two amazing people!
I got to know them while they were planning their 2012 wedding and this year they are beginning a new chapter of their love story.
They are ADOPTING!
This is that part of my job that makes me go straight to a teary goo-ball and gives me fits of giggles because...I've known.
I've known this HAPPY news since Michelle reached out to me months ago for collaboration on announcing it.
Holding onto that kind of emotion is priceless. Realizing I have that kind of trust makes me melt. Getting to celebrate it with them is magical!
I also know that this journey started long before today. It's been a very emotional process for them and it will continue to be.
But as many people wrote on their social media pages. This baby, whoever he or she is, won the lottery. They are going to be terrific parents and
I can't wait to share more of their journey as it unfolds.
Join me in celebrating them!
Have you been through this process? Do you have words of encouragement to share?
Leave them some positive thoughts in the notes below.
Blessings Always. ~Katie

Once you start adding babies to your family, life can get hectic really fast. Although studio sessions are an amazing opportunity for many parents, sometimes the comfort of your own home is much more simple and manageable with a energetic toddler and a brand new infant. I was happy to bring Jason and Rachel's newborn session into the home after the arrival of their baby girl, Olivia. Having known them for a number of years and bring present to capture both of their birth stories, we've built an awesome relationship. Gavin, their oldest, is two and full of spunk. Bringing a new baby home can be disruptive to an older sibling and challenge their comfort level a bit. Being able to bring the session to their home allowed him to remain comfortable in his environment and gave him the chance to show his true personality when he was ready for pictures with the family. Not to mention that since these sessions are shot in your home, they offer a personal touch that you just can't get in the studio. For those seeking this type of session, it's definitely worth it to find a photographer that has the flexibility and eye for it. I offer both studio and in-home sessions and love each individually.
Congratulations, Jason, Rachel, Gavin & Olivia! Love you guys to the moon and back! ~Katie

I was so glad to hear that this little bundle had arrived ahead of the Christmas holiday so that we could get a precious holiday photo like this one. I can not tell you how awesome it is to work with mamas who love to celebrate how amazing their body is during pregnancy. It's so lovely to capture such joy and the epitome of a woman's creative expression. For this mama who is expecting her little one on Christmas Day, we really kicked it up a notch. A wreath of holly and a winter white gown of lace was a perfect pairing for the recent snow fall in Chicago and the warm late fall sunlight in the studio. I'm in love with this session and I'm so glad she has these images to cherish of her last pregnancy. Much love. ~Katie

First newborn session in the new studio is complete. Jaxson was sweet as pie and made himself right at home. Even at three weeks new, he managed to fall into a sleepy milk coma with no issue, but graced us with his big beautiful eyes too. I loved spending time with him and his Mama in the new space. It was warm (very warm) and cozy for this little squish. I had everything at my fingertips and was able to change gears so effectively. I'm grateful for this creative space that I get to work in. I'm looking forward to all the winter sessions that will be able to take place inside it's walls.

I love meeting new clients. It's a new chance to interpret someone else's story. Someone you've never met before. Some may think of it as a daunting task to make strangers feel comfortable enough to show their most genuine bond in front of the camera. I simply leave it to intuition and an open heart, and when I get a chance to capture pure emotion like this, I know I'm on the right side of the camera. These photos most definitely say, "This is us. Right here, right now. This is our life together. This is how I smile when you smile. This is how I laugh when you laugh. This is what I feel when you make that face. And I wouldn't change a thing." This family was the epitome of fun. We had so many wonderful laughs during their session and the simple, natural joy they share as a family totally shines through in their photos. I've known Mom and Dad for quite a number of years, we all used to work together. We've both moved on, built and grown our families and kept in touch here and there. I was excited to meet their little ones and catch up on the last 5 years. I'm so honored to be able to give them these adorable memories. Happy Fall!

They are long time friends of mine from college who have invited me to capture some of their most treasured moments together. For their fun fall family session and pregnancy announcement we spent some time picking apples and enjoying lots of cuteness from their 2 year old son, Gavin. I had the pleasure of visiting with another one of my homebirth families from earlier this year. I can't believe that these gorgeous fall days are almost gone for the year. We really lucked out and have enjoyed some of the nicest autumn weather that we've seen in years! I'm overjoyed by how many sessions I've been able to successfully schedule outdoors. My guess is that it was all that rain we saw this past spring. The colors on the trees are so vibrant and nature is certainly putting on its best show, just like this family did. Four little cuties to hold close. All photogenic and terribly fun to spend time with! Thank you Eide Family for such a great session! ~Katie

I'm so glad that I decided to offer weeknight fall mini sessions. Even though they get earlier and earlier in the evening the further into the month we get, they are so beyond worth it. We didn't have to depend on 6 solid weekends of perfect weather. We spread it out and I left room for reschedules and it's been a fantastically calm busy season. I've enjoyed seeing so many new and old faces in front of my camera this year. It's these relationships that I love so much! This mini session was with the Kelly family. Baby Nora (now 15mo old) was a KHP birth session last July. I can't express how lovely it is to be invited to watch these kiddos grow and change. I absolutely love it. Thank you so much for coming out to see me this year, guys! Happy Fall! ~Katie

This sweet little one above and her family have been requesting photos from KHP for over two years now. I met them when she was only 6 months old and before I had a studio to work out of. And like so many other families that have trusted me over the years, she has grown with KHP. I've watched her become a big sister, learn how to talk, walk and GIGGLE! Her Mom and I have always laid out solid plans for their sessions, but she closes all emails to me with, "Sounds great, but we trust you and I know you'll make it look awesome!" I admit there are times when I don't feel as confidant with that trust, but if you know me, I always like a good challenge (as much as I resist it sometimes). Her family ALWAYS comes perfectly coordinated as well. If anyone ever wonders what to wear or how to coordinate colors....I usually send them one of their galleries for a good example! So it's pretty awesome when you start the session with something great to work with.
This session was Kate's 3 year milestone session. WOW! 3 years! How did that happen? Weren't we just talking about smash cake in the park? This year it was HOT, it was HUMID and it was RAINING (how different). I grumbled. Oh, how I grumbled about the weather. I finally resigned to doing their summer session in the studio, to which Kate's Mom said, "Sounds great. We trust you and I know you'll make it look awesome."
>insert panic<
But it's SUMMER, I want to be outside! I want to be anywhere but the studio in the SUMMER! As my daughter with a winter birthday promptly kicks dirt and says...."I never get my birthday pictures outside in fun dresses because of the SNOW!"
I flopped down at my desk and finally blew a whole bunch of blocked energy and took the reigns over the session ahead of me. I got my space and looked at the world around me. Which at moment was my office. I have much of my client and personal work hanging in there. To do exactly what it did that day. INSPIRE ME! There are two images, one of my daughter and one of a reeeeeeeeally longtime client at Kate's age. Who were this cute kids staring back at me? Dancing in the rain and jumping in the puddles?
The inspiration images from past sessions.
DUH, Katie! >light bulb moment<
Go outside! Embrace nature! Get a little wet! I had done it before! Letting a three year old be a three year old!!! I jumped up with excitement (I often see myself a cartoon character in these moments). I would need balloons, a rain coat and boots, an umbrella AND....bubbles! I warn you, what you're about to see is some serious cuteness! Look at how the session turned out.
And of course I was thrilled to get the email from Kate's Mom saying she loved them all so much, which makes my heart happy!
^^^OH! Did I mention, Kate brought a crown with her? Birthday Princess! Heck, yea!!! ^^^
...and guess who decided to show his beautiful face late in the session! Mr. Sunshine!

It's always nice to find new locations for sessions. This time I met these adorable boys on the beach front, just south of Milwaukee on a gorgeous night! Again, due to the torrential rain that we've seen this spring, finding locations that aren't soaked or saturated with standing water is a huge plus. I couldn't believe how fortunate we were to have such beautiful sunlight and calm waters. It was perfect!

Maybe a more appropriate title for this (less SEO friendly) would be "Dancing Between Raindrops."
I'm sure you've read on many photographer's blogs this year that the weather has us all pulling our hair out. Seems that all I've heard is when is summer going to get here? Will we ever have another dry day? The weather was nicer in Ireland and Seattle this week than it was in the midwest! Hahaha! Even through tons of reschedules and rain delays, I've still managed to capture some absolutely adorable families. This one was so much fun because this little cutie really could have cared less about what was falling out of the sky. She was ready for fun! Her parents and I matched her energy and ran with it. At one point, the sky was sunny on one side of the street and pouring on the other. I was standing under my mini van's trunk hatch and photographing them from across the street so they could stand where it was dry! Hahaha! Learning to accept and lean into the challenge can really have it's benefits. I'm so glad we didn't reschedule this one! It worked out too well! Much love to Miss Elena on her 1st year milestone! Happy Birthday, Baby!

As I reflect back to the long winter that we had this year and the renewal of spring, I think about all the birth families that I have gotten to serve this year so far. I've been witness to some of the most unique birth experiences, both in the home and in the hospital. The process of birth has the ability to break us down so that it can renew us on an inner level. That process looks different for everyone and each person's experience is their own. Birth is raw. It can be messy. It's destructive. But in order to grow, some things must be destroyed first and through that deep exploration and destruction of our inner self we get to feel the joy and happiness of being able to know a new, untouched part of ourselves.
Tracy and Tj's birth plan could not have gone more opposite than how they had intended, but it was how the dealt with it that showed their resilience and strength and ultimately their love for each other.
When Tracy's labor started it had a rhythm all its own. Tracy breathed through each contraction as it came for several days. She met each one with openness and the excitement that comes with the anticipation of meeting your baby for the the first time. She went in for a prenatal visit with her midwife and to everyone's surprise was much closer than anticipated to meeting this new little soul. So close that it seemed a drive back home would probably be longer than the remainder of her labor. A birth space was prepared for them, baby was monitored and Tracy was given the time to relax and go inward. She continued to meet contractions for several hours with the generous and compassionate care of her husband and midwives. Baby was strong. Mama was strong. Back rubs, leg rubs, breathy pushes encouraged Tracy to follow a desire to go deeper within herself.
Despite their best intentions for a home delivery, it was apparent that baby might need some additional assistance with her grand entrance. There were a few moments of shattered hopes shared among the room, but what shined above all else was the acceptance of this natural flow by Tracy and Tj. They moved past resistance and reluctance and found yet another part of their inner selves. The transfer to the hospital was seamless. Filled with love and respect for this family. Their midwives stayed by their side as the hospital staff confirmed what that afternoon and previous few days of labor had been slowly building up to. Baby was in a unique position and despite every best effort, had no intention of moving. Tracy and Tj, faced with yet another detour from their original plan, but moved through their resistance and agreed to a cesarean birth; which both agreed later ended up being a blessing.
Through all the chaos and destruction of their birth plan, came this beautiful little soul. A little reminder of the strength and love that her parents share. It is without a doubt that this little one will grow to know love, courage, and kindness. Congratulations to one amazing family! Thank you so much for inviting me along for your journey. You rocked it! Much Love, ~Katie

Birth is such a powerful and transformative process for a woman to experience. It calls upon so many parts of her consciousness that she didn't even know existed. As her body works in tandem with her baby to enter this world, it can dig up some deeply stored emotions within her. Apprehensions, fears, you name it...these feelings get thrown at her faster than she can analyze them. Leaving no other choice but to let them wash over her and let them go leaving a much stronger and transformed person. During this overnight delivery, I got to witness another beautiful transformation of a mother and father; growing their family, one little boy stronger. I was so honored to be in attendance. Thank you Anya and Eric for allowing me to capture this incredibly transformative event in your life.

I was so thrilled to join this happy couple in the city for their engagement photos. Little known secret...I LOVE winter photo sessions! Chicago is definitely a great backdrop in any temperature! Tiffany and Eric are planning their big day remotely from their west coast home and doing a wonderful job of it. I can't believe the next time I see them the snow and ice will be gone and their coats will be traded in for a tuxedo and wedding gown! Congratulations guys and thank you for trusting me with your wedding day!

It's been so much fun to get back to my roots this winter as I've started doing in-home lifestyle sessions again. Since I've had the studio space available, it's been far and few between that I get to join clients in their homes. The fun part of these sessions is wrapping the families in their own surroundings, making the experience and the final images even more sentimental and special. The kids warm up to me a lot quicker and they are usually eager to show the new person around. It gives them something to be proud of. Big Sister Tatum was undoubtedly excited to have me visit. She showed me her bedroom, her toys and her baby brother. Mom reported that she even asked if I could move in after I left. Earning the trust of my littlest clients is always a highlight of my sessions. It's a job well done, pat on the back for me. So, thank you Tatum!

This stunning couple came to visit me at the studio with their pup last weekend. One of the most well behaved dogs I have ever met; and so protective and gentle with baby-to-be. They are expecting their first little one early this spring. I was just blown away with how good motherhood already looks on Savanna. This little guy or gal is going to be very lucky to have such outstanding parents! Congratulations guys!

Lifestyle sessions are becoming my favorite types of sessions these days. I do love the studio, but taking photos in my client's homes, surrounded by their own energy really puts a spark of deeper emotion into the photos. I'm so happy that this couple invited me out to document their first pregnancy. Their little boy, Drake will be here in the spring and they are so excited to share their life with him!

At eleven days new, this little one's newborn session was put on hold for the first Chicago blizzard of 2015. It was pure joy to finally meet this little peanut last week at the studio. Joining her for the session were Mom and Grandma, which was such a blessing. Little did I know that Grandma was the "baby whisperer!" Little Madelyn was all about cluster feeding until I defaulted to Grandma's experienced touch. Baby girl fell into a deep sleep and the rest is history! Thank you so much and congratulations to Mom, Holly on the beautiful arrival of this sweet baby girl!

I say without concession that every single birth, even for the same mother, is different. It can be different or many reasons, but I tend to believe that it's because we experience each one from present time. Meaning that we as self are older, wiser and bringing to each birth different experience from the parts of life already lived.
Baby Niels' birth was special for me because no more than 3 years ago I attended his older sister's birth day, in the same room, with the same people. When Julie contacted me about sweet baby #4, I was really excited because this was a family I had been through labor with before. I had that faint over confidence that it would be easier the second time and I'm sure Julie might have felt the same way; after all it was her 4th pregnancy.
Baby Neils' Homebirth Story from Katie Hall Photography on Vimeo.
As I crossed off the days on the calendar and kept my phone on loud, I started to wonder how this birth would be different for all of us. This baby was special. Conceived against all the odds and proving to be very different than his siblings. Julie had a lot of starts and stops to her labor. Lots of false alarms that kept my family fed on crock pot meals and my camera bag in ready position; as is the life of any on-call professional. I don't consider myself a thrill seeker, so the adrenaline rushes after 2am phone calls kind of take care of that void in my life. I'm okay with that >chuckle<. Julie went 10 days past her due date (a new experience for her). I think we were all a little amazed. She labored very quietly. She birthed in her bed and Niels was born in the caul! So many wonderful firsts for this Mom four times over. I was in awe of her strength, her bravery and her moxie. Within 2 hours after giving birth she was tucked into bed, baby at her breast and conducting a homework session with her her oldest son. Her other two readied for bed in a swirl of activity. Among the movement was the calm, confidant energy of a seasoned mother, bringing all of her experience into present time.
Happy Birth Day Julie! Thank you from the bottom of my heart for inviting me into your birth space once more. I'm so grateful. <3 Katie

I don't know where the time goes. I feel like it was just yesterday that Oliver made his grand entrance. How can be one year old already? I've said it before and I'll say it again...it is such an honor to help a family document their baby's growth through the first year and many times through the first few years. Be sure to scroll all the way through to see the epic smash cake photos from this session! Oliver really "got into" his birthday cake! I have so many favorite sessions and so many amazing clients, but there was something about this one that makes it stand out to me. Taken at the studio; Elena and her family came in for six month milestone photos and family photos just before the Christmas holiday. Her mama walked in with one of the most fabulous tulle skirts I've ever seen! A rich burgundy wine color with accompanying heels and pearls. She looked like a modern day Donna Reed. Confidant, vibrant, complete.
In that moment, she was the perfect picture of maternal balance. I immediately matched this picture with her. As Mom's, we take on so many different roles while caring for our little ones and it's so easy to lose ourselves among all the demands and responsibilities. It's a feeling I know all too well and I knew very quickly I wanted to make Mom feel as fabulous as she looked that day! I'm so in love with these photos and I think I may need to find a similar skirt for my prop bins. Enjoy!

Sweet Addison & Avery joined me in the studio with their parents for my first newborn session of 2015. Two babies are certainly a big deal and these two were nothing short of amazing for their session. Weighing in at just around 8 pounds each I was so pleased that they fell asleep at the same time for me and loved on each other as I moved them into their little poses. Welcome baby girls!
]]>Please meet sweet baby Camille. She was just precious as can be for me during her newborn session this week. Her family joined me at my new studio in Libertyville for these beautiful photos. She slept like a champ and as I understand was a great passenger in the car too. Thank you to her Mommy and Daddy, Lisa & Adam for sharing their beautiful girl with me. I can't wait to see her in a few more months for milestone sessions!
If you or someone you know is expecting a baby this winter, please send them my way. I'm now booking Dec-Mar maternity, birth and newborn sessions. My new natural light studio space is a perfect location for a comfortable and customized session.

The article that features my work was written by Mariamni Plested. It explores the rising demand for birth photography and the reasons families are choosing it.
Many are using birth photography to record and document their birth experience, something that was almost unheard of only a few decades ago.
Plested does such a lovely job illuminating why birth photography is a wonderful art form to communicate the birth experience, both from the mother's perspective and the provider's perspective.
"Birth photography is documenting
the experience of normal birth and empowering women
to embrace their unique experience of birth
in a way that has the potential
to deeply challenge how birth
is usually portrayed in our culture." -Mariamni Plested
I'm honored to be able to provide such strong imagery to the world, to normalize this empowering and beautiful process, whether in or out of the hospital. It stands as my favorite area of photography.
Thanks to all the families who have invited me into the most intimate experience in their lives. It's been a pleasure to be able to document and preserves their stories. I'm looking forward to helping empower more in the future.

A New Form of Birth Art
This little sweetheart was just a dream for his newborn session! He slept, he woke up, he ate, he nailed it! And so did his loving parents. I had an amazing time in studio with everyone. We were able to work in a variety of props and also some beautiful cuddles. Newborn sessions are the longest, so thank you Laura and Dave for your trust and patience. I'm so happy I got to create some timeless art out of your memories. Much love! ~Katie

]]>Congratulations, Mr. Max! You've been on the outside, getting to know the world just as long as you were inside Mommy's tummy. I'm sure your parents are wondering how these second nine months could have gone so fast when the first nine seemed so long. You've grown so much and have become so playful. You good sir have brought so much joy to your Mommy and Daddy! The next few weeks are a slippery slope to your first birthday where we stop counting how close you are to a newborn and start thinking about how close you are to being ONE! Enjoy the rest of your first year little guy! I can't wait to smash some cake with you soon!
I love helping families welcome their new little ones. There are so many emotions that fill those early days and it can be different for each member of the family. It's the joy, the beauty, the realness and newness that makes it so emotionally charged. I felt so touched that spending time with baby Emily's family allowed me to capture her big brother's breakthrough emotion. He gave his baby sister a little kiss and a cuddle. My heart was so full to witness such a beautiful moment that left Mom and Dad a little teary eyed. It goes without saying that my job is pretty special and moments like that I cherish always. Welcome sweet girl!
I'm not sure where the 'smash cake' trend came from, but it is ALL the rage for most toddling one year old's first birthdays! Diving into their first sugary confection is a sight to behold. When you lack the hand eye coordination for proper utensil usage and are generally used to missing your mouth when you eat, it's no surprise that these little kidlets turn their first birthday cake into a colorful mess! My clients absolutely LOVE that I capture this fun and outrageously cute first. Not only is it great to watch them fumble with messy hands and miss their mouth with a handful of cake, it's awesome to capture that first taste of something so new and SO sweet! It usually boasts a reaction similar to biting into a lemon for the first time. Some kids have to shake off the sweet sugar rush. Some close their eyes and swallow hard, but usually they ALL dive right back in for seconds!
Sweet Oliver was definitely the majority and one of the best 'smash cake' babies I've ever had! He even layered his balloons with frosting! I had a great time spending the morning with this little dude and his family! Happy Birthday, Pal! You earned every last bite!

Oh my gosh, this little guy doesn't even have to smile. His eyes do all the emoting on their own. Little Hudson was my most recent First Year Series graduate. I've had the honor of capturing his milestone sessions since his newborn days (http://www.photosbykatiehall.com/blog/2013/8/baby-makes-three-chicago-newborn-photographer) and now he's ONE! Happy Birthday little man. It's been so fun watching you grow! ~Katie
Linda and Andrew celebrated their June 22nd wedding among close family and friends in the backyard of their gorgeous new home. Linda arranged every detail from the ribbons on the mason jars to the hand made flower bouquets. Andrew customized the music playlist and in fact spent the night before his wedding securing their reception tent from impending tornados and heavy rain. You would never know the morning of that the night before had boasted such threatening weather. The wedding day was filled with bright sunshine, wispy clouds and tons of love from close family and friends. I would like to say congratulations to this wonderful couple. Thank you for sharing your special day with KHP!
I literally could have photographed this little guy all day! He was such a good natured little subject. I want to say congratulations to Mommy and Daddy, Jamie and Joe on their new addition. I'm so honored that you chose KHP for your family's memories. Enjoy every sweet moment! It goes so fast!
Each birth that I get to attend leaves me on a high that just can not be described other than pure joy wrapped up in blanket of happy giggles and then sprinkled with a little exhaustion. I absolutely love that I get to witness a new little life entering the world and taking their first breathe. Not to mention hold the space and witnessing a woman go through one of the most transformative processes of her life. Two weeks ago I attended Jake and Jami's beautiful home waterbirth. This was Jami's second homebirth and her labor and delivery was simply clockwork. She checked in with me several times that day. Arranging everything on me end early allowed for a leisurely drive into Milwaukee where I got to watch the sun set on a beautiful summer day. It was peaceful, my nerves were calm and I simply said hello to the next few hours with anticipation and excitement. Jami's labor unfolded very routinely. She breathed through every contraction in rhythm. Her doula by her side the whole time as her husband Jake built and filled the birthing tub. Her midwives arrived with almost and hour to spare. They readied the tub and she slipped into the warm water just in time to deliver her beautiful baby, which she carefully lifted from the water and into her arms to say hello. The room rejoiced with oohs and aahs as Jami breathed relief through her body and love onto her baby! It was simply the best reaction to hear she had delivered another sweet boy. A baby brother for their older son to grow beside. It was not long before big brother came home and met his new baby for the first time. The room was full of love and laughter as they snuggled up and read bedtime stories before the clock even hit midnight. Newborn exam and postpartum instructions left us on the road to our own homes by 1am. Big yawns, but silly grins accompanied me home that night. Welcoming babies is just so special. I'm such a lucky photographer! Thank you Markov family for inviting me into your space. Congratulations and welcome to the world baby Tristan!

I do so enjoy a good smash cake session! This little girly was slow to dig in, but once she did there was no slowing her down! Smash cakes sessions are always a little bittersweet. They mark the final session in a First Year Milestone Series. It has been a joy and a pleasure to be able to watch her grow over the past year. I always tear up just a little when a little graduates from a milestone series. I see these babies every 3-6 months, getting to know their little personalities and befriending their families. I'm so blessed to have such wonderful and trusting clients.
Stay sweet, little one! Happy Birthday to you!
I'm delighted to introduce baby Max and his family! He was such a happy and alert little peanut. This was an absolutely gorgeous studio session that was very relaxed and go with the flow.
I often get asked what poses and props I use. Although there is quite a bit of preparation that goes into newborn sessions, I more often than not enjoy letting the baby run the show and I follow their lead. Max fell sound asleep, allowing me to explore a few simple individual poses. However, after he woke up and enjoyed some milk he was wide awake and loved being held. I love when that happens because it creates some of the most engaging and sentimental moments, right in front of my lens.
The bond and love between this little guy and his family is so beautiful! Please enjoy! Welcome to the world, Max!
Can you even believe how beautiful this little girl is with her bright eyes and cherub cheeks? If she is any indication of how amazing her little brother or sister will be, then I can't wait to meet this little soul on his or her birth day. Mama is anxious to meet her little one, but I'm so glad we got the chance to capture these tender moments before baby's arrival. I'm sending her wishes of comfort and ease as she prepares to welcome another sweet baby.
It has been so much fun to capture milestones for this family since their son, Zachary joined their family over 3 years ago. This most recent session was the one year milestone for their adorable daughter, Madison. Two wonderfully busy and smart kiddos that are just a joy to watch play. Congrats Jess and Brian on another beautiful milestone!
I could not believe that this stunning woman is only 2 weeks away from holding her precious baby in her arms. Her and her husband portray pure joy as they await their little one's arrival. Such an exciting time for new parents. Waiting and hoping and wishing for the day that they get to see that sweet face.
This gorgeous girl was a joy to photograph. There is nothing like being able to capture a newborn session outside on a beautiful summer evening surrounded by a loving family. I can't wait to watch her grow over the next year. Welcome baby Ellie!
Sometimes my intuition and creative energy work overtime. I didn't know that it was THIS family, but I actually had a dream about the session before they ever contacted me. I saw the purples, the creamy light, and vivid colors. At the time, I didn't have anything in my prop stash that resembled these fabrics. I started gathering items for the session over several weeks. Some for other sessions entirely. It wasn't until the family arrived in the studio that it all came together. They brought with them a large plastic tote full of heirloom blankets and quilts. I tell my clients all the time to feel free to bring special items with them to their session. I've never had anyone bring a WHOLE tote! I cracked open the top and I saw the missing items from my dream immediately! Then I realized that my dream was about THIS family! They had brought two patchwork quilts with them that completed my vision. The purple patchwork and the patchwork flowered quilts pictured here are both family heirlooms and so fantastic for this session! Pieces so personal and nothing I could ever have ever found on my own.
A lot of people ask how I market myself and how I find clients. Honestly...when things like this happen, it's clear to me that sometimes I just have to wait until they find me. I have faith that everything is meant to be! Congratulations to this family and welcome to the world baby girl!
I have been so blessed this spring to have worked with so many lovely women and their families as they prepare for the arrival of their first, second, third and even multiple babies. Looking back at all these beautiful bellies brings clarity to the fact that every single belly bump is as unique as the Mommy that is carrying its thumbprint. All those old wives tales that claim to determine a baby's gender by the way his/her mother carries it should be TOTALLY thrown out the window! Just as each woman is different, so to is the way they carry their baby and it's so much fun to document! Please enjoy the wonder and joy that is the belly that houses such miracles.
Another one of my fabulous fall couples! Melissa and Dave are absolutely marvelous to work with. They simply radiate love, which is deeply rooted in their faith. I'm very much looking forward to their rustic barn wedding later this year!
I'm so happy to present little Caden's newborn photos. I was honored to capture these tender moments for my extended cousins only a few short days after they welcomed him into their lives. He is a beautiful little peanut and we're so happy to share our lives and our family with him. Welcome sweet boy! Boat rides and hugs are waiting for you!
I'm so thrilled to have these two on my fall wedding calendar this year. They are so photogenic and fun to work with. Please join me in congratulating Katie and Brian on their commitment to each other!
Blood Moon Lunar Eclipse | As seen from Lindenhurst, Illinois on 4.15.2014
Last night a total lunar eclipse was able to be seen from all of North America. This meant that I sat myself in my driveway for a few hours and watched our universe do its amazing thing. From 12:30am CST until 2:20am CST I popped out of the garage (since you know it was a balmy 20 degrees in northern Illinois last night with snow on the ground) to capture this awesome sight. Unwilling to dig my tragically terrible tripod out of storage, I managed to hand hold my Canon 5D Mark II with my 70-200mm. I can't say that I have a desire to take up astro photography, but this was pretty fun and a highlight for me! I hope you all enjoy what I was able to witness last night while you were all slumbering.
Did you see it too? What did you think?!?!

Big sister on the other hand was FULL of personality. Addison turned three this week. She's no longer a toddler, but not quite a kid. This session shows all of the fidgety, expressive innocence that defines three. It is a transitional age where little ones are maturing and learning to be more independent. There is no better way to watch this transition than to observe the relationship that a child has with his/her "lovie," "woobie," "blankey," etc. It's probably the last year that they will be allowed to or will want to have that security and so I always invite whatever it may be along for the session! There is a level of innocence that a security blanket shows in a child that I think is such a fun way to capture the age.
Happy Birthday Kiddo!

I'm delighted to introduce another October newborn, baby Max. I was invited to capture Joann's maternity photos alongside his first year series, which continues into 2014. These maternity photos were taken only a few short weeks before Max's arrival on a very wet fall day. The photo above is a top 10 favorite of mine from 2013, proving that beauty is all around and sometimes you just need to dance in the rain. I just love the playful spirit in this photo. Thank you Joann for trusting me. You were one gorgeous mama-to-be.
Max's newborn session was shot on an extremely chilly day at the end of October. With no hope of getting outside like I originally planned, I knew a low-pressure lifestyle session was just the thing for this new family. It ended up being just the perfect continuation to their maternity photos. We revisited some of the same spaces in their home that they once occupied as only a couple, but now as a family of three. Joann was able to feed Max on demand throughout the session and her husband Jon sang a soft lullaby by Harry Chapin to soothe Max so sweetly. These are moments that I get to bare witness to. Memories that will forever be a part of this family. It is a true honor to do what I do every week. Welcome sweet boy!
love having the time and making the effort to do a little bit of traditional portraiture alongside my tremendously emotional lifestyle work. Capturing a new family in these tender moments is so very special. A mini maternity session is to a baby story series what an engagement session is to a wedding. It's a simple add-on to a series and a wonderful introduction for creating a relationship between me and any new clients.
If you're expecting in early to mid 2014 and looking for a newborn photographer, please do reach out. I would love to chat about my many investment options and savings plans for beautifully captured memories throughout the first year of your baby's life.
Blessings,
Katie
I would like to introduce the newest member of the Cagney family, baby Hudson! It was a great honor to meet this little fellow only 14 days after his arrival. He is a very mellow little chap that has a great appetite. We paused a few times for feedings, which means he'll be growing and changing so fast. I'm glad I was able to capture this special time for his Mom and Dad. Congratulations to Kristi & Dan! Welcome little boy!
I was so excited to meet Miss Ava and her family down in the city for another great milestone session. I've been photographing her since she was just a baby. It's amazing how fast 4 years goes! This year was a big year for her. She became a BIG SISTER and is enjoying her new little brother tons. I can't wait to start his photos in the coming weeks! Happy Birthday kiddo, I hope you enjoy your 4 year photos! You are full of personality and I think it shows!
Summer is not always the most ideal time to be at the end of your pregnancy, but it does create a perfect opportunity for beautiful maternity photos...at the beach! I had so much fun visiting with this family again as they get ready to welcome the newest member of their family. I can't wait to hear the announcement of his arrival. That's right, Big Sister is getting a Little Brother! Hang in there Keri, you're doing great! Best wishes to you. ~Katie
We had a lovely day for this beautiful family's photo session. They just celebrated their daughter's first birthday and I am so happy that I was able to capture this joyous time for them. Happy Birthday sweet girl!
The day would not have been complete without a battle ready canon for display and photo use. Devoted friends slumped over as the confederates were taken by the yankees creating a perfect photo op.
And did I mention Steve's Tardis? Yeah, this head table would not have been complete without it. Just like the Tardis, this wedding party certainly was "bigger on the inside" and full of love for this amazing couple! Congrats, Steve and Alison. "May you live long [together] and prosper." :)
As Melissa and I have discussed their re-occuring bad photo luck so many times, I thought it was time to write an amusing blog post about it because it's just so dang hilarious! I started photographing the the family when their first kiddo was born 5 years ago. I did all of Mackenzie's milestone sessions and then along came Grant, their little boy. We've accomplished all of his, including a few family sessions as well. I can't believe it's been 5 years of this hilarity, but alas it has.
There has not been one session where the weather has cooperated, a child has not been sick, rushed to the ER hours before the session or when someone's schedule has had to change on the spot. I believe it was Mackenzie's 3 year photos and Grant's newborn session that I was out at the store 24 hours before buying raincoats, wellies and umbrellas because there was no doubt that it was going to pour the next day. Their halloween mini session promised clear skies and a warm day- however the city had other plans as it started raining only miles from the Wrigleyville location we planned to use for their superhero themed photos. Then there was the day of 50 mph winds that all of a sudden came whipping off the lake during their fall family session last year. I must also say that most of these days where we finally got everyone dressed, transported and in front of the lens were rescheduled from a previous day when one of their kids or mine were sick!
When we arrived at the lake where chilly was really kind of an understatment. It was downright cold. The wind had changed since my late morning session and the temperature had dropped at least 25 degrees. With stroller, blankets, coats and half of our talent still drowsy from a nap on the way over, we muddled through the session and as always got some great photos despite the less than desirable circumstances. Each kid took a turn huddled under a blanket for warmth or ran around just to break a sweat while the other had their photos taken. Needless to say I'm so lucky to have such understanding and flexible clients in the Wilke's. We've gotten some downright stunning photos of their family over the years. Thank you guys for your commitment and dedication! I can't wait to see what September has in store for us! ((HUGS)) ~Katie
Sugar and spice and everything nice...It's a GIRL!
My family and I are very excited to announce that another little girl will be joining our family this year! More pink, more polka dots, more ribbons and bows, more My Little Ponies and army men???
Yes you heard me right. One of the best things I LOVE about having girls is the versatility of their gender role. There really isn't a better time to be a woman in my opinion. At least not in this house. I grew up in household of women. I'm very familiar with baby dolls, playing kitchen and crafting. I also spent many a night watching hockey with my Dad at the Madhouse on Madison (old & new), playing outside in the dirt, baiting a fishing rod and yes I was on the golf team in high school...ALL of which helped me carry on conversations with the most masculine of men in my adulthood. Being able to identify with a variety of people because of this well rounded background is an asset and I can only wish the same for our daughters.
My husband and I, although quite practical, live a very creative lifestyle and want to surround our kids with opportunity. My husband is excited to be raising girls to understand history, politics and how they can define their role in society. You can find him on an ordinary afternoon playing army men and airplanes with our daughter and flight simulation games on the computer (something that she's better at than even I am), but in the next breathe playing tea party and "ponies". My kiddo can wear a mean Buzz Lightyear shirt any day of the week...or better yet a boy's Blackhawks jersey and it's perfectly accepted and encouraged in our home! We are so happy to be this new little girl's family. We can't wait to meet her!

]]>To say that this mama to be is embracing her pregnancy is an understatement. She and her husband showed up to the session with little expectations other than to celebrate her body, their relationship and their sweet baby boy. Because of her openness and willingness I was able to hit each one out of the park. They trusted my vision for the session and it was such a huge compliment to wind up with so many great captures. I could not have asked for a more natural couple and a cuter baby bump! This little dude is going to be one lucky little guy! Congrats guys! I can't wait to capture your little man's arrival and newborn photos. I'm so happy for you!

Now, go build a snowman!!! :D
I found the above quote shortly after visiting the {J} family and I knew it fit the experience perfectly. Mom had contacted me to capture some updated family images since the arrival of their beautiful daughter. They also had a little boy whom she said in her email was the tough one to photograph and she would be ecstatic if we got any photos of him at all. Now I'm no stranger to shy toddlers or even independent ones that just don't like to take directions (i.e. my own 3 year old), but I could tell that Mom was not kidding. I spent the next few days knowing how I wanted to capture this family and as I drove over to their house on a crisp and very clear morning I knew exactly what I needed to do. I just needed to spend some time and earn his trust.
I pulled up to the house about 10 minutes early to set up and get my gear all pulled out. I met Dad and my tough subject first. I bent down so that we were eye to eye and introduced myself. He reminded me so much of own 3 year old. Very enthusiastic about his toys and not at all about sitting still. As I started sorting my equipment I could see him in my peripheral peaking from the perimeter of the room. It was about the time that I was examining the light, which was beyond beautiful, that all of a sudden I had a shadow behind me. I slowly sat down and opened my camera bag, Dad joined me and I invited him over to have a look. We pulled out all the fun lenses, the extra batteries, and then jackpot! he found my backdrop clamps in the side pocket! He loved those things! When Mom joined us he got a little shy again, but I quickly asked who the baby was and he got to introduce his new baby sister to me.
We slowly inched our way into the session where he preferred standing off to the side and watching. Then I asked him if he wanted to take a photo...this gets them every time! He got the chance to be in charge. After that he hung back next to me and helped make Mom and Dad smile. Suddenly without an invitation he walked right up to Mom, sat down and said "cheese". I just about fell over- and I think Mom and Dad might have too if they weren't holding a newborn. We did it! We cracked this little guy's code. Along with the help of some fruit snacks for encouragement, he put in a good hours worth of smiles, hugs and kisses! He even helped get the baby to stop crying. What an awesome big brother!
The rest of the session was outstanding. Baby sister could not have been more perfect and like I said the light in their home was magnificent! I really must thank Mom and Dad for inviting me into their home and being incredibly patient with me and their son. Yes, the session was a little longer than some, but the point is...time doesn't matter that much, because for me it's about the bonds that I get to create while I'm there. Kids will tell you exactly what they think and how they feel about everything! Their honesty will flat out astound you. That's why to win the trust of a child is the single best compliment I could ever receive.
Congratulations to this beautiful family! Welcome little girl!

It's true what they say, that each pregnancy is different. At first it was the level of nausea and the foods I craved or shall I say didn't crave. And I can't forget the exhaustion! However, besides all that, our lifestyle is different this time around. I'm at home with my awesome, almost 3 year old all day and running my own business. I'm on the go much more and keeping a much different schedule. The new schedule helps us to eat so much better, which helps keep my energy up and my weight gain down.
*sidenote* I can not express how in love I am with my new juicer. I've never loved to drink my vegetables so much and this kiddo loves veggies!
As I was saying, I cherish the time I have to ease into my morning routine and the ability to change it up when we need/want to. Such as taking an hour to capture my own cute maternity pictures when the mood strikes. I'm loving myself and nurturing my spirit far more this time around. I've spent a year opening up about who I am and embraced my individuality. In doing so, it has helped me live consciously in the present moment and has prepared me to embrace this pregnancy differently.
I seem to think another aspect of what makes every pregnancy different is that each little soul is different. It's no secret that this little one will add a different component to our family, it already has. God is giving us exactly what we need in a second child and a sibling for our daughter. This little one is definitely spirited in personality and may very well give our daughter a run for her money, but I can only hope that they are fast friends, confidants and are respectful of one another.
We are so excited to learn more and get to know our new addition.
Oh the joy and anticipation of a new baby! Becca and Geoff are getting ready to welcome baby #2 to their family in just a few short weeks and I was so excited to take her maternity photos last week. It is always so flattering when I'm asked to be another Photographer's family photographer! Yes, that's right- this lovely Mama is a herself a Photographer! It was a chilly day, but she didn't mind at all. Anything for a good photo! I am a snow bunny at heart. I was so happy to have someone in front of the camera who was brave enough to tough the elements with me for some fantastic snowy photos! As I was driving in for the session I was watching the snow fall and knew it was going to be an absolutely enchanting session. The bold colors that Becca wore were such a good choice against the freshly fallen snow around her. Not to mention her daughter, Delaney was cute as a button in her purple coat and snow boots. I'm wishing this whole family all the best as they go from a family of 3 to 4 very soon! Good luck guys! I can't wait to hear about your little one's arrival!
Psst! Guess What? I have been keeping a big secret!
My family and I are very excited to announce that our second baby is on the way!
This little "gummy bear" will be joining our home in late June/early July of 2013!
Phew- I'm so glad to finally get that out in the open! We are closing in on week 14 and it has been so hard to keep it under wraps until the grand announcement at Christmas. We honestly thought we had pulled it off until a very adoring and trusted cousin of my 2.5 year old excitedly told me (after the announcement had been made, yesterday) that our daughter had let the cat out of the bag to him! I knew we were pushing our luck telling her all the way back in October- but it was too much fun talking with her about it! We have been getting all the fun questions:
Where will the baby sleep?
How will the baby eat?
How will the baby talk to us?
Will the baby ride a bike?
Is Santa bringing the baby under the tree?
Can I be a big sister today?
Bless her little heart she is so eager to know how life works. I have to admire her spirit and fearless attitude. I was almost moved to tears when I thought about the amazing trust that she must have had in my cousin to tell him such a secret. Or the burst of excitement she felt to actually comment on her upcoming responsibilities as a big sister. Then there is the whole idea that she actually comprehended (at 2.5) that Mike had a big sister and she in fact was going to be a big sister herself. She continues to astound us and confound us on a daily basis. The story was too excellant to leave out. It is going to be one for the baby book for sure! So thank you, Mike, for not saying anything and humoring your little shadow. :)
As for me, the past few months have definitely knocked my socks off. I never remember being so tired, lol. It is that birth amnesia I am sure of it! Makes you forget everything so that you are willing to do it all over again. I have never been more grateful for my loving husband who has graciously surprised me with dinner many nights and finished up the household chores just so I could be in bed by 6pm. And yes, early bedtimes for 3 weeks in a row definitely put me a little behind on my editing projects, but I rallied and feel like I rocked my first trimester along with the regular balancing act that is my day to day.
As we wrap up celebrating the holiday season I feel so blessed to be carrying yet another little life. I'm looking forward to the new year and all the new firsts we will get to create with this new baby. I can't wait to share this experience with all my many clients that I have on the schedule for 2013 already. God certainly had a way of arranging my schedule for me by sending clients my way that fit around my July maternity leave. I have all the faith in the world that this year is going to be amazing. I'm praying for a healthy baby and a safe delivery. I hope you will all join us in our joy, our journey and our prayers.
Happy New Year!
Katie

I found my niche' in birth photography at the same time that I started my business full time two years ago. I've always been intrigued by pregnancy and birth, even as a young kid, and I just somehow feel very comfortable around it. Kim has always been a huge advocate of my work and a cheerleader for KHP. Being a part of the birthing community in southern Wisconsin with Kim has been such a rewarding experience. As you can imagine I was thrilled when she asked that I document her son's arrival. Arriving with only 30 minutes to spare the light filled her bedroom with the glory of heaven and together she and her husband welcomed their baby with intensity and love.
Reid was 10lbs 2oz and absolutely perfect! Congratulations Kim and Kevin!

My kiddo at the beach just a few weeks ago during a location scout. Something I never thought I would experience in the middle of a weekday.
Even though I've been a photographer for over 10 years, it was two years ago today that my journey to find the photographer within myself really began. The fact that I am a small business owner with amazing clients, noteworthy equipment and a real passion for the job is still remarkable to me. I continue to surprise myself with new challenges and new accomplishments every single day and it's the best feeling to wake up to.
I needed to do something that represented how far I had come. What I really wanted to do was shout from the rooftops all the success that I felt in my heart for how much I feel like I've grown as a photographer in the last two years.
Instead, I did what I do best- expressed visually. I sat for the first time in almost a year and redid my website's homepage. I could not believe how many new images I was sincerely proud of and wanted to share front and center. The hard part is that when someone looks at a picture, everyone sees something different. There will be a different experience or story attached to it depending upon who looks at it. I must have put together 40 different combinations of photos trying to find the best collaboration and perfect flow of energy.
Thank you to everyone that has hired me, encouraged me and most importantly cheered me on. I have so much to be thankful for, the space provided here would never do and I could never formulate the words to fully express it. Enjoy.
I. Love. My. Job.
<3 Katie
